Here's a story about the face of Satan appearing on a turtle. And a story about the face of Jesus appearing on a cheese sandwich, a tortilla and a fish stick. Who believes this nonsense, anyway? The same people who believe in the Shroud of Turin, proven to be a hoax time and again.
But maintaining that the Shroud is not "authentic" is to implicitly concede that another shroud might be. The Shroud is not authentic, but not because it was made in the middle of the 14th century, but because it is preposterous to believe that someone (Jesus in this case) had supernatural powers. That someone could violate the laws of physics at will. Or that a face could magically appear on a shroud, or a cheese sandwich, or a fish stick, a tortilla or a turtle.
The people who believe in the Shroud, or the other "manifestations", live in a magical world. They make decisions based on magical beliefs, and they are becoming more aggressive in forcing those magical beliefs on the world as a whole.
I don't mean to pick on Christians or others who believe in the Shroud; other religions will come up for their fair share of abuse in their turn. But they do present an easy target.
Stay tuned.
